Love Instead of Hate Community Conference - 20th October 2018

Why should I attend this Conference?

This will be an interesting and fun family day out!  You can meet new people from across the County and listen to some inspirational people who have some amazing and humbling stories to tell.  We want everyone to come together to show that we embrace our differences.

Hate crime is a widely unreported problem as victims don’t always think a crime has been committed. This event will aim to provide a greater understanding about what constitutes hate crime and how it can be reported within Warwickshire. The conference objectives are:-

• Raise awareness and reinforce messages about hate crime and the importance of reporting.
• Encourage communities to speak out against hate and report incidents.
• Empower and inspire people to be actively involved in combating hate within their own community.
• Update communities about the work being undertaken in Warwickshire by Partners (You said, We did) and obtain ideas about new areas of work.

Who can attend?

We really want to encourage as many people as possible to attend the day.  This event is FREE for anyone who lives and/or works in Warwickshire. Families are welcome. We will have activities and supervised workshops for children so that the grown ups can enjoy listening to our speakers whilst their kids are entertained.  We have also set-up joint activities for families to take part in together.

What is the format of the Conference?

The event will be a mix of speakers, presentations and more interactive workshop sessions.

We have managed to attract an amazing group of speakers with interesting and emotive personal stories to tell:-

• Trish Adudu – Trish is a well-known BBC Coventry & Warwickshire radio host and TV presenter on shows that include The One Show and BBC Midlands Today.  Trish has been a victim of hate crime and has spoken widely about her experience.  She has kindly agreed to act as the host for the Conference.
• Dan Biddle – Dan suffered horrific injuries in the 7/7 London bombings. He has had to rebuild his life and his story is truly inspirational.  He now works to improve access for the disabled.
• Sylvia Lancaster OBE –  Sylvia’s daughter, Sophie Lancaster was just 20 when she was horrifically murdered by teenage boys because she was a goth. Sylvia established a charity, The Sophie Lancaster Foundation as a lasting legacy to her daughter.  Sylvia was awarded an OBE in 2014 for her work to tackle hate crime.

As well as listening to some truly inspirational people at the Conference, there will also be the opportunity for attendees to take part in some interactive workshops.

• A creative art project organised by local artist Tim Robottom.  Tim is a very talented and thought provoking artist who has displayed his work previously at the Art in the Park Festival in Leamington and Street Fusion in Kenilworth.
• An African Drumming Workshop run by In2Cultures who are an award winning creative arts team. They have a passion for African percussion and multicultural creative arts, and love sharing their knowledge and expertise with everyone they work with.
• For children, there will be workshops and activities supervised and run by Victim Support.  The sessions will celebrate difference and involve some games and art.

There will also be stalls and displays from organisations who offer support and help to people who have experienced prejudice.

Do we have to bring lunch?

No.  A buffet lunch will be provided.  We will ensure that within the menu on offer all dietary and cultural needs are met.  However, to avoid any problems, if you have any special needs or specific dietary requirements please let us know in advance when you book your place.

How do I get to the venue?

The conference is being held at Life Church, 17 Bulkington Rd, Bedworth CV12 9DG

The venue is within walking distance of Bedworth Rail Station.  There is plenty of car parking which is free.

What time is the Conference?

The event will start at 10am and finish at 3:30pm.  Registration for delegates will start from 9:45am and there will be refreshments available for those arriving early.

Can my organisation have a stand at the event?
